Fall 2007 Match Reports

09/27/08: West Potomac 52 v. Happy Valley 7

On a humid day in Maryland, the West Potomac Beavers came out prepared to take on Happy Valley.

West Pot struck early and often, although one player forgot to touch the ball down, in the first half with tries coming from Panic, Jon, Michael, Church, Panic, and Michael again all in the first 30 minutes of the match. Support set up the tries as pop passes and timely outlet passes set up some well executed tries. Defensively, the West Potomac side controlled Happy Valley's attacks with strong tackling and several key contested rucks. The first half came to a close with West Pot up 31 nil.

The second half started slow and Happy Valley was able to roll a try through. The sloppy offensive play on West Pot's part contributed to Happy Valley's field position which ultimately set up their try. Rather than rest and allow Happy Valley a chance back into the game, the team rallied strongly in the final 30 minutes of the game and brought its form back to par. Three more tries were put down as Michael, Jon, and Bible each scored in the second half. The final minutes of the game were filled with attacking action as Brent came in off the bench and had some long runs. A long run at the final whistle went unrewarded as a forward pass ended the match. It was great to see the effort in the last of 80 minutes in an already decided match. That type of effort will win the matches as the competition grows harder each week.

The tone of the match was set early with great tackling in the forwards led by Ray who stopped several Happy Valley plays in their tracks. The backline countered Happy Valley's kicking attacks well and prevented major ground from being gained. All in all West Pot played a very strong match and executed the game plan we set out earlier in the week. The big thing will be to put a solid 80 minutes of rugby together as the season continues. Get out to practice this week as it will be a fun time for all.

HV could not travel with a b-side so an inner-squad scrimmage was setup. Young vs. Not Young battled it out. Tyler picked up his second try and Michael (a different one) scored his first try on a great play with Panic.

Man of the Match went to Jon for great play throughout the match and his two tries.

Final Tally, A-Side Tries:
Michael 9 - 3
John 11- 2
Panic 8 - 1
Church 13- 1
Bible 10 - 1

Conversions: Bible 10 - 6/8

09/20/08: West Potomac 39 @ Renegades 0

West Potomac played their only match inside the Beltway against fellow D.C. ruggers, the Renegades. Play was strong across the club, but while The Red Jacket went to a West Pot newcomer last week this week it was taken home (for the first time) by a wiley vet. Grant earned Man of the Match honors by capping off a solid performance with a try at the closing whistle.

09/13/08: West Potomac 55 @ Chambersburg 5

West Pot traveled up to Chambersburg, PA to play Chambersburg RFC for the opening match of the season. Last fall Chambersburg traveled to DC and was left with an 80 point differential to stew over for an entire season. At opening kickoff Chambersburg was definitely looking to play hard and score some points, unfortunately Robb "Sideshow" Stout put down a try in the opening minute. Michael, the new scrum half, made sure Chambersburg would remember him with three quick tries in the first half. Another new guy, James Church, got in on the first half action putting down a try in the right corner. By half time, West Pot found itself up 31 to 5.

The second half found a good individual (selfish) effort by Virgil who carried three defenders with him into the try zone and an unselfish play by Michael in setting up Church for his second try. The weather began to get to both teams as the final minutes dragged on and chippy play came out. Josh "Not as fast as he used to be" Porto was caught from behind several times with some great high tackling by Chambersburg's wings and fullback. Sunshine and Sideshow each put tries down to cap the game off and West Pot came away with a 55-5 victory.

The B-side had a change in weather as the rain started. But strong tackling from The Beard helped assuage any doubts from West Potomac supporters that the B-side match would be lost. Tyler put his first try down off a nice setup from Sean Lovitt and Josh finally outran someone for his first try of the season. Chambersburg got on the board with a try from West Pot prop, Ben Salisbury making the final score 12-5 (although I thought the b-side had a third try and I don't know if kicks were made or not).

Final Tally, A-Side Tries:
Michael Lilly 9 - 3
James Church 14 - 2
Robb Stout 4 - 2
Brian Lapato 15 - 1
Virgil 13 - 1

Conversions: Bible 10 - 5/9

Final Tally B-Side Tries
Josh Porto 14 - 1
Tyler Fish 11 - 1
Conversion kicks: 1/2
